About this exercise

A self-myofascial release and active mobility drill for the hamstrings performed in a seated position with a ball placed under the back of the thigh. Rolling the ball while actively contracting and relaxing the hamstrings enhances tissue release and improves flexibility.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a sturdy surface or the floor with one leg extended and a ball placed under the back of that thigh
  • Place your hands behind you for support and lift slightly so the ball bears your weight
  • Apply moderate pressure onto the ball with the back of your thigh
  • Slowly roll the ball along the hamstrings from just above the back of the knee toward the glutes
  • When you find a tender spot, pause and actively contract then relax the hamstring muscles for a few seconds
  • Continue rolling through the full length of the hamstrings
