Roll Ball Rectus Femoris Stretch

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Roll Ball Rectus Femoris Stretch.

EasyQuadriceps

About this exercise

The Ball Roll Rectus Femoris Stretch uses a small ball to apply myofascial pressure along the rectus femoris — the central quadriceps muscle that crosses both the hip and knee — releasing tightness that can contribute to anterior knee pain and limited hip extension. It is particularly useful as a pre-stretch warm-up before squats or lunges.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down on the floor and place a small ball (lacrosse or tennis ball) under one thigh, roughly in the middle of the front of the leg
  • Support yourself on your forearms and use your arms to control how much body weight presses onto the ball
  • Slowly roll the thigh along the ball from just above the knee toward the hip crease
  • Pause on any tight or tender spots for several seconds to let the tissue release
  • Optionally bend the knee to bring your heel toward your glutes while paused on a tender spot, adding a dynamic stretch component
  • Continue rolling for the target duration
  • Switch to the other leg and repeat
