Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Ball Piriformis Release.

EasyGlutes

About this exercise

A targeted myofascial release technique using a firm ball to apply direct pressure to the piriformis muscle deep within the glute. This helps reduce tension, break up adhesions, and relieve sciatic nerve discomfort associated with a tight piriformis.

How to Perform

  • Place the ball on the floor and sit on it, positioning it under one glute
  • Cross the ankle of the working leg over the opposite knee to externally rotate the hip and expose the piriformis
  • Shift your bodyweight onto the ball to apply pressure to the targeted area
  • Slowly move your hips in small circles or rock side to side to locate tight spots
  • When you find a tender area, hold steady pressure on it for 20–30 seconds and breathe deeply
  • Continue exploring the area, pausing on any additional trigger points
  • Release and switch to the other side
