About this exercise

The ball roll outside thigh IT band stretch targets the iliotibial tract (tractus iliotibialis), a thick band of connective tissue running along the outer thigh from the hip to the knee. Using a therapy ball to apply myofascial pressure along this area can help reduce tightness that often leads to knee and hip pain.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side and place a therapy ball under the outer thigh, just below the hip
  • Support your upper body on your forearm and stack your feet or cross the top foot in front for support
  • Slowly roll the ball down the outer thigh toward the knee, pausing on tight or tender spots
  • Hold pressure on any tender areas for 20–30 seconds before moving on
  • Breathe deeply and try to relax the outer thigh into the pressure
  • Continue rolling back and forth for the desired duration, then switch legs
