About this exercise

The ball roll gluteus medius release uses a therapy or massage ball to apply myofascial pressure to the gluteus medius, the muscle along the outer hip responsible for hip abduction and pelvic stability. Rolling over this area helps relieve tightness that can contribute to hip, knee, and lower-back discomfort.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor and place a therapy ball under one side of your glutes, targeting the outer hip area
  • Cross the ankle of the working leg over the opposite knee to increase exposure of the gluteus medius
  • Shift your weight onto the ball and begin making small, slow circles or rolling side to side
  • Pause on any tender or tight spots and hold for 20–30 seconds
  • Breathe deeply and allow the muscle to relax into the pressure
  • Continue for the desired duration, then switch to the other side
