About this exercise

The Ball Roll Calf Stretch uses a small ball to apply targeted myofascial pressure along the gastrocnemius and soleus, releasing tightness and improving ankle mobility. Rolling the ball while bearing partial body weight allows you to find and work through specific knots or tender areas in the calf complex.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with your legs extended and place a small ball (lacrosse or tennis ball) under one calf
  • Use your hands behind you for support and lift your hips slightly off the floor to increase pressure on the ball
  • Slowly roll the calf along the ball from just above the ankle up to the back of the knee
  • Pause on any tight or tender spots for several seconds to allow the tissue to release
  • Rotate your ankle in small circles while paused on a tender point for added effect
  • Continue rolling for the target duration
  • Switch to the other leg and repeat
