About this exercise

The Rocky Pull-Up Pulldown is an advanced back exercise performed on a pull-up bar that combines the upward drive of a pull-up with a controlled pulldown motion, maximizing lat engagement throughout the full range of motion. It challenges grip strength, scapular control, and upper-body pulling power.

How to Perform

  • Hang from a pull-up bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Depress and retract your scapulae to engage the lats before initiating the pull
  • Pull your chest toward the bar, driving your elbows down and back
  • At the top, emphasize the lat squeeze as you transition into the downward pulldown phase
  • Slowly lower yourself back to the starting position with full arm extension
  • Maintain a braced core and avoid swinging throughout the movement
