About this exercise

The ring Y raise is a bodyweight shoulder and upper back exercise performed on gymnastic rings. You lean back holding the rings and raise your arms overhead into a Y shape, targeting the rear deltoids, lower trapezius, and rhomboids. The rings add instability that challenges stabilizer muscles throughout.

How to Perform

  • Set gymnastic rings at approximately chest height and grasp one ring in each hand
  • Lean back with arms extended, body at an angle and heels on the floor
  • Engage your core and retract your shoulder blades slightly
  • Raise both arms up and out to form a Y shape overhead, squeezing the upper back
  • Hold briefly at the top with arms fully extended, then lower slowly back to the start
  • Keep the movement controlled and avoid swinging your hips
