About this exercise

The Ring Wide Pull-Up is a demanding upper-body exercise performed on gymnastic rings with a wide overhand grip. The instability of the rings increases muscle activation across the lats, rear deltoids, and rotator cuff compared to a fixed bar, while the wide grip emphasizes the outer sweep of the back.

How to Perform

  • Grip the gymnastic rings with an overhand (pronated) grip wider than shoulder width
  • Hang with your arms fully extended and your body in a straight line
  • Depress your shoulder blades and engage your core before pulling
  • Pull your chest toward the rings by driving your elbows out and down in a wide arc
  • Continue pulling until your chin clears the level of the rings
  • Squeeze your lats and rear deltoids at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower yourself back to the full hang in a controlled manner
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
