About this exercise

A bodyweight horizontal pulling exercise performed with gymnastic rings set close to the floor, using a wide hand position to emphasise the outer lats and rear deltoids. Lying beneath the rings and rowing your chest up to meet them challenges the full back musculature under constant tension.

How to Perform

  • Set the gymnastic rings low, just above the floor, and lie underneath them on your back
  • Grip the rings with a wide overhand grip, arms extended, heels on the floor
  • Keep your body in a straight plank-like position from head to heels
  • Brace your core and depress your shoulder blades before you begin to pull
  • Row your chest up toward the rings by driving your elbows out wide
  • Squeeze your back muscles at the top when your chest reaches the rings
  • Lower yourself back to the starting position with control
