HardMiddle back

About this exercise

A challenging pulling exercise performed on gymnastic rings with added weight, using a neutral (palms-facing) grip. The suspended rings introduce instability that forces greater activation of the back stabilisers and rear shoulder muscles throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Set gymnastic rings at roughly hip to mid-torso height
  • Secure a weight plate on your chest or put on a weight vest for extra resistance
  • Lie beneath the rings and grip each ring with palms facing each other (neutral grip)
  • Extend your legs and brace your core to hold your body in a straight line with feet on the floor
  • Pull your chest up to the rings by driving your elbows back and squeezing the shoulder blades
  • Pause briefly at the top when your chest meets the rings
  • Lower with control until your arms are fully extended
  • Keep your body rigid throughout every rep
