About this exercise

The ring support hold is an isometric gymnastic rings exercise where you suspend your bodyweight on straight arms above the rings, developing exceptional shoulder stability, chest strength, and upper-body control. Actively rotating the rings outward at the top increases the demand on the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers.

How to Perform

  • Set the rings at approximately hip height and grasp them with a neutral grip
  • Jump or press up so both hands are beside your hips, arms fully extended and locked out
  • Actively rotate the rings outward so your palms face slightly outward and thumbs point back
  • Depress your scapulae downward and maintain a hollow-body position with your core engaged
  • Keep your legs straight and together, toes pointed, and eyes forward
  • Hold the position for the prescribed time, then carefully lower yourself back down
