Ring Self-Assisted Chin-Up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Ring Self-Assisted Chin-Up.

MediumBicepsMiddle back

About this exercise

The ring self-assisted chin-up uses gymnastic rings at a height where your feet can rest on the floor, providing partial support as you build pulling strength. The supinated (palms-toward-you) grip places greater emphasis on the biceps and allows a more natural shoulder path than a standard bar chin-up.

How to Perform

  • Set the gymnastic rings low enough that your feet can remain on the floor when your arms are extended
  • Grip the rings with a supinated (underhand) grip, hands roughly shoulder-width apart
  • Lean back and place your feet flat on the floor with legs extended in front of you
  • Retract your shoulder blades and pull your elbows down and back to initiate the movement
  • Drive your chest up toward the rings, using your legs for as little assistance as needed
  • Bring your chin above the rings at the top and squeeze your biceps and lats
  • Lower yourself under control back to the starting position, fully extending your arms at the bottom
