HardMiddle back

About this exercise

A bodyweight pulling exercise performed on gymnastic rings with palms facing each other (neutral grip). The unstable ring surface activates additional stabiliser muscles throughout the shoulder girdle and arms, making this a more demanding variation of the standard chin-up.

How to Perform

  • Grip the gymnastic rings with palms facing each other and hang at full arm extension
  • Allow the rings to rotate slightly inward so they sit at a natural angle for your wrists
  • Retract and depress your shoulder blades, then pull your chest toward the rings
  • Drive your elbows down and back to bring your chin above the level of the rings
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower yourself slowly to the dead-hang position
  • Keep your core braced and avoid swinging throughout the movement
