About this exercise

The ring maltese cross is an elite-level gymnastics static hold in which the body is suspended horizontally with arms extended straight out to the sides on gymnastic rings. It demands extraordinary chest, shoulder, and core strength and represents one of the most difficult bodyweight holds in existence.

How to Perform

  • Grip the gymnastic rings with an overhand grip and jump up to a straight-arm support position
  • Slowly lean forward and lower your body until it is parallel to the ground
  • Extend both arms straight out to the sides with elbows locked, forming a cross shape
  • Keep your body rigid and toes pointed throughout the hold
  • Hold the position for the target duration, then carefully return to the support position before dismounting
