About this exercise

The ring kneeling ab rollout is an advanced core exercise that uses gymnastic rings to roll forward from a kneeling position, placing intense demand on the abs and anterior core while the instability of the rings adds an extra challenge for stability muscles. It is a progression from the wheel or barbell rollout.

How to Perform

  • Set the gymnastic rings low to the ground and kneel on a mat in front of them
  • Grip one ring in each hand with a neutral grip, arms extended toward the floor
  • Brace your core tightly and keep your hips in line with your knees and shoulders
  • Slowly roll the rings forward, allowing your arms to extend overhead as your hips lower toward the ground
  • Keep a rigid, hollow-body position — do not let your lower back arch or your hips drop
  • Extend as far as you can control without losing tension in the abs
  • Pull the rings back toward your knees to return to the starting position
