About this exercise

The ring eccentric leg curl uses the same setup as the standard ring leg curl — heels in gymnastic rings, hips elevated on a yoga block, towel for comfort — but emphasises the slow, controlled lowering phase to maximise hamstring loading. Eccentric hamstring training is highly effective for building strength and reducing injury risk, particularly for the proximal hamstring.

How to Perform

  • Set gymnastic rings at ankle height and lie on your back with heels placed inside the rings
  • Position a yoga block under your sacrum and a folded towel under your upper back for comfort
  • Bridge your hips up and curl both heels toward your glutes to reach the shortened position
  • Begin the eccentric phase by slowly extending your knees over 3–5 seconds, lowering your heels back to full extension
  • Use both legs to curl back up, then lower with control again for the next repetition
  • Keep your hips elevated and your core braced throughout the entire set
