About this exercise

The resistance band standing shoulder external rotation strengthens the external rotators of the shoulder — primarily the infraspinatus and teres minor — using a band anchored at elbow height. It is a staple exercise for rotator cuff health, shoulder stability, and injury prevention.

How to Perform

  • Anchor a resistance band at elbow height to a stable object beside you
  • Stand sideways to the anchor with the band in your far hand (away from the anchor)
  • Bend your elbow to 90 degrees and keep your upper arm tucked against your side
  • Rotate your forearm outward away from your body against the band's resistance
  • Hold briefly at the end of the range of motion
  • Return your forearm to the starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch to the other arm
