About this exercise

The resistance band standing hip abduction is a unilateral lower-body exercise that isolates the outer thigh and hip abductors by lifting one leg out to the side against band resistance. It is effective for targeting the tensor fasciae latae and gluteus medius without heavy loading.

How to Perform

  • Place a resistance band around both ankles and stand upright, holding a wall or sturdy support for balance
  • Shift your weight onto the standing leg, keeping a slight bend in the knee
  • Slowly raise the working leg directly out to the side as high as comfortable, keeping the toes pointing forward and the torso upright
  • Hold briefly at the top, then lower the leg back down in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch legs and repeat
