About this exercise

The resistance band standing 90-degree shoulder external rotation strengthens the rotator cuff external rotators with the shoulder abducted to 90 degrees. Performing the rotation from this elevated arm position more closely mimics sport-specific and overhead movement patterns, making it a valuable addition to shoulder rehab and prehab routines.

How to Perform

  • Anchor a resistance band at shoulder height to a stable object in front of you
  • Stand facing the anchor and raise your working arm to shoulder height, elbow bent 90 degrees
  • Hold the band with your forearm pointing toward the anchor (palm facing down)
  • Rotate your forearm upward until it points toward the ceiling, keeping the upper arm stationary
  • Pause briefly at the top of the movement
  • Slowly return your forearm to the starting horizontal position under control
