About this exercise

A seated ankle rehabilitation and mobility exercise that uses a resistance band to strengthen the peroneal muscles on the outer lower leg by turning the foot outward against resistance. It is commonly used to improve ankle stability and prevent lateral ankle sprains.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a chair or bench with your foot flat on the floor and a resistance band looped around the ball of your foot
  • Anchor the other end of the band to a fixed point on the inside of your foot (e.g., a table leg or the opposite foot)
  • Keep your heel on the floor and your leg still throughout
  • Slowly rotate your foot outward (away from the midline of your body), pulling against the band
  • Hold briefly at the end range of motion
  • Slowly return your foot to the starting position, controlling the band tension
  • Complete all reps on one foot before switching to the other
