Resistance Band Assisted Neutral Grip Chin-Up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Resistance Band Assisted Neutral Grip Chin-Up.

EasyBicepsMiddle back

About this exercise

A beginner-friendly variation of the neutral grip chin-up that uses a resistance band looped over the pull-up bar to reduce the effective bodyweight you must lift. The neutral (palms-facing) grip is easier on the wrists and elbows, making this an excellent entry point for developing chin-up strength.

How to Perform

  • Loop a resistance band securely over the pull-up bar and let it hang down
  • Place one or both knees (or feet) into the loop of the band
  • Grip the bar with a neutral grip (palms facing each other), hands shoulder-width apart
  • Hang at full arm extension with your core braced
  • Pull yourself upward by driving your elbows toward your hips until your chin clears the bar
  • Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your lats
  • Lower yourself slowly back to the starting position, letting the band assist the descent
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
