About this exercise

The rear fly step back combines a reverse fly arm movement with a simultaneous backward step, engaging the posterior deltoids while also activating the glutes and hamstrings. The dynamic step pattern increases coordination demands and adds a cardiovascular element to the shoulder exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and arms extended in front of you at shoulder height
  • Simultaneously step one foot back and open both arms out to the sides in a rear fly motion
  • Squeeze the rear deltoids at the top of the fly, keeping a slight bend in the elbows
  • Return the stepped foot forward and bring your arms back to the starting position
  • Repeat the step back and rear fly on the opposite side
  • Keep your chest up and avoid rounding your upper back throughout the movement
  • Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions
