About this exercise

The push-up with twist adds a rotational element to the standard push-up: at the top of each rep, one arm rotates upward to open the chest and engage the obliques. This variation trains chest and triceps strength while simultaneously developing rotational core stability.

How to Perform

  • Start in a high plank position with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width and body in a straight line
  • Lower your chest to the floor under control, keeping elbows at roughly 45 degrees from your torso
  • Press back up to the start position
  • As you reach the top, lift one hand off the floor and rotate that arm up toward the ceiling, stacking your hips and opening your chest
  • Hold briefly at the top of the rotation, then return the hand to the floor
  • Perform the next push-up and rotate to the opposite side
  • Alternate sides with each rep

About the Rotating Push-Up

The Rotating Push-Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
