About this exercise

The Pull-up with Bent Knee between Chairs is a bodyweight lat and upper-back exercise performed by pulling your chest up to a bar or support set across two chairs, with knees bent to reduce the load. It serves as an accessible introduction to vertical pulling for those building toward full pull-ups.

How to Perform

  • Position two sturdy chairs with a bar or broomstick secured across the seats at a comfortable height
  • Lie on your back beneath the chairs with knees bent, feet flat on the floor
  • Grip the bar with an overhand (pronated) grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Keep your body in a straight line from knees to shoulders and brace your core
  • Pull your chest upward by driving your elbows toward the floor, leading with the chest
  • Continue pulling until your chest reaches or nearly reaches the bar
  • Lower back to the starting position under control
