About this exercise

The pull-up is a compound upper-body pulling exercise performed by hanging from a fixed bar with an overhand grip and pulling the body up until the chin clears the bar. It primarily develops the latissimus dorsi, with the upper back, biceps, forearms, and rear deltoids assisting.

How to Perform

  • Grip the bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder width
  • Hang at full arm extension with the shoulders engaged and the core braced
  • Pull the elbows down and back while drawing the shoulder blades together
  • Keep pulling until the chin clears the bar
  • Lower under control back to a full dead hang
  • Avoid swinging the legs or kipping the hips
