About this exercise

A high-skill isometric hold that uses the edge of a sturdy chair as a gripping surface to practice the planche position, where the body is suspended horizontally with straight arms. It develops extraordinary anterior deltoid, chest, and core strength while building the body awareness needed for a full planche.

How to Perform

  • Place a sturdy chair on a non-slip surface and grip the front edge of the seat with both hands, shoulder-width apart
  • Straighten your arms completely and round your shoulders forward by protracting your scapulae
  • Lean your weight forward over your hands, shifting your center of mass in front of your wrists
  • Tuck your knees toward your chest and press firmly through your palms to lift your body off the chair
  • Hold the position with elbows locked, shoulders protracted, and as much of the body horizontal as possible
  • Lower with control and rest fully before the next attempt
