Assisted Pistol Squat

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Assisted Pistol Squat.

HardQuadriceps

About this exercise

A unilateral bodyweight squat where you lower yourself onto a chair using one leg while keeping the other leg extended forward, making the pistol squat accessible by limiting the depth and providing a stopping point for those building toward the full movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand in front of a chair, facing away from it, balanced on one foot
  • Extend the free leg straight out in front of you, keeping it off the ground
  • Slowly lower your body by bending the standing leg, keeping your arms out for balance
  • Descend until you gently touch the chair seat with your glutes — do not sit down fully
  • Drive through the heel of the standing foot to rise back up to the starting position
  • Maintain an upright torso and keep your knee tracking over your toes
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs

About the Assisted Pistol Squat

The Assisted Pistol Squat is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
