About this exercise

The pistol squat to box is a single-leg squat progression where you control your descent onto a box or step before standing back up. The box provides a target depth and a moment of pause, making this a valuable stepping stone toward the full unsupported pistol squat while still heavily loading the quadriceps and glutes.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one leg in front of a box or sturdy step, extending the other leg forward off the floor
  • With arms extended forward for balance, slowly lower yourself by bending the standing knee
  • Descend in a controlled manner until you sit lightly on the box — do not collapse onto it
  • Pause briefly, then press through the heel of the standing leg to stand back up to the starting position
  • Keep your torso as upright as possible and your extended leg off the floor throughout
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
