Peterson Step

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Peterson Step.

MediumQuadriceps

About this exercise

The Peterson forward side step is a unilateral knee-stability and VMO-strengthening drill that challenges the inner quadriceps and hip abductors while training single-leg balance. By stepping forward and to the side from a single-leg stance, it also improves hip control and proprioception essential for athletic performance and knee health.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one leg at the edge of a low step or on flat ground, with the non-working foot lifted
  • Keep a slight forward lean in the torso and a soft bend in the standing knee
  • Reach the free foot diagonally forward and to the side, tapping the ground lightly
  • Return the free leg back to the start without letting the standing knee cave inward
  • Maintain an upright posture and controlled knee alignment throughout
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs

About the Peterson Step

The Peterson Step is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
