About this exercise

A unilateral bodyweight calf raise performed with the torso bent forward and one leg working at a time. The forward lean places the gastrocnemius under a stretched position similar to a donkey calf raise machine, maximising the range of motion through the calf muscles.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a sturdy surface such as a wall or rack and hinge forward at the hips to about 90 degrees, placing your hands on the support
  • Shift your weight onto one foot and cross the opposite foot behind the working ankle
  • Let the heel of the working foot drop below floor level if using a step or elevated surface for added range
  • Rise onto the ball of your working foot as high as possible
  • Squeeze the calf at the top of the movement
  • Lower your heel slowly back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
