About this exercise

The dumbbell stiff leg deadlift is a hip hinge exercise that isolates the hamstrings and glutes by keeping the knees nearly locked throughout the movement. Holding dumbbells at your sides, you hinge forward at the hips, lowering the weights along your legs while maintaining a flat back.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs, feet hip-width apart
  • Keep a slight bend in your knees and maintain it throughout the movement
  • Hinge at the hips and push them back as you lower the dumbbells along the front of your legs
  • Keep your back flat and chest up as you descend until you feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings
  • Stop the descent before your lower back rounds
  • Drive your hips forward and squeeze your glutes to return to the upright starting position
