Olympic Barbell Hammer Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Olympic Barbell Hammer Curl.

About this exercise

The Olympic barbell hammer curl uses a standard barbell held with a neutral (thumbs-up) grip to target the brachioradialis and brachialis, building forearm thickness and overall arm size. The parallel grip reduces stress on the wrists and forearms compared to a supinated curl.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding an Olympic barbell across your thighs with a neutral grip (thumbs pointing up, palms facing each other)
  • Position your feet shoulder-width apart and keep your back straight
  • Brace your core and pin your elbows at your sides throughout the movement
  • Curl the barbell upward by flexing your elbows, keeping your palms facing each other
  • Raise the bar until your forearms are vertical and you feel a peak contraction in your biceps and brachioradialis
  • Slowly lower the bar back to the starting position under full control
  • Avoid swinging your torso or letting your elbows drift forward during the lift
