About this exercise

The narrow squat from deficit is a bodyweight squat variation performed with a close foot stance while standing on an elevated surface such as weight plates or a step. The added depth increases the range of motion at the knee, placing greater demand on the quadriceps throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand on an elevated platform (weight plates or a step) with feet close together, toes pointed forward or very slightly out
  • Keep your chest tall, core braced, and arms extended forward for balance
  • Slowly squat down, descending as deep as your mobility allows, letting the knees track over the toes
  • At the bottom, pause briefly, then drive through the balls of your feet to stand back up
  • Maintain an upright torso throughout and avoid caving the knees inward
