Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Mountain Climber Low Lunge.

EasyQuadricepsCore

About this exercise

A dynamic bodyweight exercise that combines the mountain climber movement with a deep low lunge position, driving each knee forward into a full lunge rather than a tucked crunch. This variation increases hip flexor stretch and lower body engagement while challenging core stability.

How to Perform

  • Begin in a high plank position with hands directly under your shoulders and body in a straight line
  • Engage your core and keep your hips level throughout the movement
  • Drive your right knee forward and place your foot beside your right hand, lowering into a deep low lunge
  • Hold the low lunge position briefly, feeling the stretch through the hip flexor of the back leg
  • Return the right foot back to the starting plank position
  • Immediately drive your left knee forward into the same deep low lunge beside your left hand
  • Continue alternating legs in a controlled, rhythmic pace
