Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Mini Squat with a Chair.

EasyGlutesQuadriceps

About this exercise

A partial squat performed with a chair placed behind you for balance support and safety, making it accessible for beginners, older adults, and those in rehabilitation. The reduced range of motion still activates the quadriceps and glutes while building confidence in the squat pattern.

How to Perform

  • Stand in front of a sturdy chair with feet hip-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward
  • Lightly hold the back of the chair or a wall for balance if needed
  • Push your hips back slightly and bend your knees to a comfortable partial depth — aim for roughly a quarter to half squat
  • Keep your chest up, back straight, and knees tracking over your toes
  • Pause briefly at the bottom without sitting down on the chair
  • Press through your heels to return to a full standing position
  • Repeat for the target number of repetitions, gradually increasing depth as strength and confidence improve
