About this exercise

The Medicine Ball Overhead Throw is an explosive plyometric exercise where you swing a medicine ball overhead and drive it forcefully forward or downward, developing full-body power through the shoulders, core, and legs. It is commonly performed against a wall or with a partner to allow continuous repetitions.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a medicine ball with both hands at chest level
  • Dip slightly into a quarter squat to load the legs
  • Swing the ball overhead with arms fully extended
  • Explosively extend the hips and drive the ball forward and downward with maximum force
  • Follow through with the arms and release the ball toward the wall or target
  • Catch the rebound (or retrieve the ball) and return to the starting position
  • Reset and repeat for the desired number of repetitions
