About this exercise

A prone corrective exercise that isolates and activates the upper trapezius by performing a scapular elevation and retraction press against bodyweight while lying face down. It is commonly used in rehabilitation and postural correction to build strength and motor control in the upper back.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down on a mat with your forehead resting on the floor and arms alongside your body
  • Retract your shoulder blades by drawing them together and then elevate them toward your ears
  • Press through your upper trapezius muscles to lift your shoulders slightly off the floor
  • Hold the contracted position briefly, feeling the activation in the upper back and base of the neck
  • Slowly release your shoulders back down to the floor
