About this exercise

Lying straight leg marches are a core exercise performed on your back where you alternate lifting each straight leg upward in a controlled marching motion. Keeping the lower back pressed to the floor throughout challenges the deep abdominals and hip flexors while protecting the lumbar spine.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back with legs straight and arms resting at your sides
  • Press your lower back firmly into the floor and engage your core
  • Slowly raise one straight leg to approximately 45–60 degrees off the floor
  • Hold briefly at the top, then lower it back down with control
  • Before it touches the floor, raise the opposite leg in the same manner
  • Continue alternating in a steady marching rhythm for the desired number of reps
