About this exercise

A bodyweight back extension performed face down on the floor that emphasizes upper-back and trapezius engagement, improving posture, spinal erector strength, and scapular retraction. The pressing action of the trapezius adds an active stabilization component to the classic prone back extension.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down on the floor with your arms extended alongside your body and palms facing down
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together to engage the trapezius before lifting
  • Simultaneously lift your chest, head, and arms off the floor, extending through the upper back
  • Press your palms slightly into the air to further activate the trapezius
  • Hold the top position briefly, keeping your neck neutral and gaze toward the floor
  • Lower slowly back to the starting position with control
