About this exercise

The lying leg raise on a flat bench is a core exercise that targets the lower abdominals by raising both legs from a horizontal position while lying on a bench. Using a bench allows a greater range of motion than the floor version, intensifying the stretch at the bottom of each rep.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back on a bench with your hips at the edge and your legs hanging off the end
  • Grip the sides or top edge of the bench firmly to stabilize your upper body
  • Keeping your legs straight or slightly bent, brace your core and raise your legs until they are perpendicular to the floor
  • Squeeze your abs at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower your legs back down to the starting position without letting them drop
  • Stop just before your heels touch the bench at the bottom to keep tension on the abs throughout
