About this exercise

The Lying Hover Leg Clap is a bodyweight hip abduction exercise performed on your back. Both legs are raised slightly off the floor and alternately spread apart and clap together, activating the outer thighs and glutes while the core works to keep the lower back stable.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back with legs extended and arms resting at your sides
  • Engage your core and press your lower back into the floor
  • Lift both legs a few inches off the ground, keeping them straight
  • Open your legs apart as wide as comfortable in a controlled abduction motion
  • Bring your legs back together, allowing the feet to gently clap or meet at the center
  • Keep legs hovering throughout — do not let them touch the floor between reps
  • Repeat the open-and-close motion for the desired number of repetitions
