About this exercise

The single leg negative dragon flag is an advanced floor core exercise where you lie on your back, grip a fixed anchor above your head, and slowly lower a rigid body position — with one leg extended straight and the other bent — from vertical toward the floor. The eccentric-only loading places intense demand on the entire anterior core.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on the floor and grip a sturdy fixed anchor (bench legs, a post) firmly behind your head
  • Extend one leg straight and bend the other leg, foot flat on the floor
  • Brace your core and press your upper back into the ground, then raise your hips until your body is at roughly a 45-degree angle
  • Keeping your body rigid and the extended leg straight, slowly lower yourself toward the floor under control
  • Stop just before your back touches the floor, then reset and repeat for the desired reps
  • Switch the extended leg each set
