About this exercise

An elite-level core exercise performed on the floor in which you start with your body fully raised and slowly lower it under control, performing only the eccentric (negative) phase of the dragon flag. This controlled lowering builds the extraordinary trunk strength required for the full movement.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on the floor and grip a fixed object such as a bench leg or pole firmly behind your head
  • Press your upper back into the floor and brace your entire core
  • Raise your legs, hips, and lower back off the floor until your body is vertical, supported only on your upper back
  • Keep your body in a straight rigid line from shoulders to feet
  • Slowly lower your body toward the floor in a controlled eccentric motion, resisting gravity throughout
  • Stop just before any part of your lower body touches the ground to maintain tension
  • Return to the vertical position with a controlled push or by using momentum, then repeat the negative
