About this exercise

The Lying Arm Crossover is a chest exercise performed flat on a bench with dumbbells, where the arms travel in a wide arc and cross over the midline of the chest at the top of each rep. The crossover motion increases the peak contraction of the pectorals beyond a standard dumbbell fly.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a bench holding a dumbbell in each hand with arms extended to the sides at chest height
  • Keep a slight bend in the elbows throughout the movement
  • Raise both arms in a wide arc, bringing the dumbbells up and across the centre of your chest
  • Cross one arm over the other and squeeze your pecs hard at the top
  • Slowly reverse the arc, lowering the dumbbells back to the start position under control
  • Alternate which arm crosses on top each rep
