About this exercise

The Lying Alternate Butterfly is a hip mobility and inner-thigh stretch performed on your back, alternating one knee at a time into the butterfly position. Performing the movement one leg at a time allows a greater focus on each hip's range of motion and reduces tension in the lower back compared to the bilateral version.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on a mat with both knees bent and feet flat on the floor
  • Let one knee slowly fall outward to the side, moving toward the floor in a butterfly position
  • Allow gravity and gentle muscular control to guide the knee as far as comfortable
  • Hold briefly at the end range, feeling the stretch in the inner thigh and groin
  • Return the knee back to the centre position
  • Repeat the same motion with the opposite leg, alternating sides for the target duration
