About this exercise

The lying 90-degree alternate leg extension is a supine core exercise where you hold both legs bent at 90 degrees and alternately extend one leg out straight while keeping the lower back pressed to the floor. It effectively challenges the abs and hip flexors while minimizing lumbar stress.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on the floor with both knees raised to 90 degrees, shins parallel to the ground
  • Press your lower back firmly into the floor and brace your core
  • Place your hands flat beside your hips or lightly behind your head for support
  • Slowly extend your right leg straight out at a low angle while keeping the left leg at 90 degrees
  • Return the right leg to the starting position, then extend the left leg
  • Keep the motion controlled and do not allow the lower back to arch off the floor
  • Continue alternating legs for the desired number of repetitions
