Long Lever Standing Hip Extension

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Long Lever Standing Hip Extension.

MediumGlutes

About this exercise

The long lever standing hip extension targets the glutes by extending one straight leg behind the body while standing, maximizing the moment arm and glute activation compared to a bent-knee variation. Keeping the working leg fully extended throughout the movement increases the challenge on the glutes and hamstrings.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and lightly hold a wall or support for balance
  • Shift weight onto one foot and keep a slight bend in the standing leg
  • Extend the opposite leg straight behind you, keeping hips level and squared forward
  • Drive the extended leg backward and upward through the hip, squeezing the glute at the top
  • Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower the leg back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
