Single Leg Extension (plate loaded)

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Single Leg Extension (plate loaded).

MediumQuadriceps

About this exercise

The lever single leg extension is a unilateral quadriceps isolation exercise performed on a plate-loaded leg extension machine, allowing you to train each leg independently to address strength imbalances. Working one leg at a time increases time under tension and promotes balanced quad development.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the machine pad so it rests just above your ankle when seated
  • Sit upright with your back against the pad and one leg positioned under the roller
  • Place the non-working foot flat on the footrest or let it hang clear of the roller
  • Grip the side handles lightly for stability
  • Exhale and extend the working knee fully until the leg is straight
  • Hold the top position briefly to maximise quadriceps contraction
  • Inhale and slowly lower the weight back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides

About the Single Leg Extension (plate loaded)

The Single Leg Extension (plate loaded) is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
