About this exercise

A calf raise performed on the leg press machine by placing only the balls of the feet on the lower edge of the footplate, allowing a full range of motion through plantar flexion. The machine provides constant resistance and back support, making it a reliable isolation exercise for the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles.

How to Perform

  • Sit in the leg press machine and press the platform to a nearly extended position, keeping a slight bend in the knees
  • Slide your feet down so only the balls of your feet and toes rest on the lower edge of the footplate
  • Release the safety handles and allow your heels to drop below the footplate edge for a full stretch
  • Press the platform by rising onto your toes as high as possible
  • Squeeze your calves at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower your heels back to the stretched position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then re-engage the safety handles
